Vernal Lester Blood
After a long and valiant life, Vernal Lester Blood, age 93, passed away at his home on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012. He was a kind and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, husband and friend who remained active to the very end. Vernal was born in Groveland, Idaho, on Apr. 19, 1919, to Evert Lester and Hulda Winroth Blood. He was preceded in death by his wife, 6 sisters and a twin brother.
Vernal’s family moved several times around Southeast Idaho before settling in Parker at age 11. He graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1940. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1941 and served throughout WWII. He and Maxine Stevens were married on July 24, 1942, in Corpus Christi, Texas. This marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1950.
Vernal was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1947 at the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. He farmed in Idaho for a few years before eventually going to work as a mechanic at Hill AFB, retiring as a manager in Oct. 1980. After his wife passed away in 1988, Vernal returned to Parker, ID, where he built a log house on the old family site.
In his younger years, Vernal liked to hunt, camp, and fish. In Parker, he enjoyed gardening, raising cattle, and riding his ATV. He was a active member of the LDS Church and served as a Bishop, Stake High Counselor and Scout Master inaddition to various other callings.
In 1990 he married Carol Evans who passed away in July, 1999. His twin brother, Virgil, moved in with him until he passed away in Oct. 2003.
He is survived by his son, V. Steven Blood, 7 grandchildren, Brett Blood, North Ogden, Ut., Beckie Read, North Ogden, Ut.,Brody Blood, Bountiful, Ut., Tasha Slade, Surprise, AZ., Quincey Pearce, North Ogden, Ut., Lex Blood, Salt Lake City, Ut., and Kiley Kramer, St. George, Ut,. and 16 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. in the Parker 1st Ward LDS Chapel, family visitation will be Thursday, from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. just prior to services. Internment will be at the Fielding Memorial Cemetary, Idaho Falls at 1:45 p.m. under the direction of the Bidwell Funeral Home. Military rites wiil be provided by the Bonneville Co. Burial Team.
